So with warm temperatures in full effect, there are also many things that come along with this rising climate; like blood sucking mosquitos that’ll have you itching all over and dreading Summers arrival. But don't be discouraged, because we've got you covered, literally! It is so easy to find DEET base repellents on the shelves of your local drug store, but what is better than producing your own chemical free and long lasting product?
DEET(N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide), the most common active ingredient found in many if not all of your mosquito repellents. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) DEET has been listed as “slightly toxic”. This slightly toxic ingredient absorbs through the skin and into the blood stream, causing side effects such as brain damage and destruction to other organs.
There are two ways to creating a natural repellent. In spritzer form or as a moisturizer. The active ingredient(s) within your home made protector will be the blend of Essential Oils. Heres the list of oils that can be used: Citronella, Clove, Lemongrass, Catnip, Lavender, Eucalyptus, Peppermint, and Tea Tree Lemon.
To make a moisturizer use vegetable glycerin as your base, including one or more of the oils listed. When creating a spritzer, all you'll need is your choice of oils, distilled or boiled water, and witch hazel. Here at Brown Fox we like to blend oils like Lavender, Lemon and Eucalyptus, mixing 3 to 4 drops of each oil into the vegetable glycerin and applying it as a moisturizer. This blend can also be used when making a spritzer repellent.
